Seeds provide our bodies with essential vitamins and minerals, and chia seeds are a favorite of mine for Springtime because of their cleansing properties and ability to help remove toxins and buildup from our digestive system. Chia seeds are a superfood that support strength and digestion. A serving (3 tbsp) of is high in fiber, a good source of calcium and iron, and contains 5g of Omega-3 fatty acids and 5g protein. One reason I love incorporating chia seeds into my routine is that I always feel the effects. I feel lighter and cleaner after the seeds have passed through my body and there are many ways to enjoy them.
Toxins and debris get built up in our bodies over time, so cleansing foods can be beneficial to incorporate to remove some of that buildup. Springtime can be an appropriate time to purge toxins and buildup, and cleanse from the inside out. Just like you may be deep cleaning your home, your body can benefit from a deep cleaning as well.
I like to add a serving to an 8oz glass of water, let sit for 20-30 minutes, and enjoy in between meals or first thing in the morning. The seeds are filling and can reduce hunger and cravings while supporting regular bowel movements. They become gelatinous when immersed in water, which benefits the skin, hair, nails, gut health, joints and the immune system.
Ways to enjoy chia seeds include:
- Chia Water – add 3 tbsp to about 8 oz of water, stir occasionally as you let sit for at least 20 minutes before drinking. Option to add juice from a lemon, lime, grapefruit or orange for added flavor and nutrition. Your chia water will be a gel-like consistency that you can chew.
- Chia Pudding – add seeds to milk of choice, stir and refrigerate overnight. Top with fruit, granola or enjoy as is.
- Smoothies – Add chia seeds to smoothies to easily incorporate them into your routine.
- Grind them and mix with your oatmeal, granola, cereal, salad, dips or anything you’d like!
- Add to baked breads, cookies, crackers or other baked goods.
If you feel like your body could use some purging, are low on energy or like your body could use some springtime cleansing, incorporate chia seeds into your routine and you should feel the benefits in no time. I’d love to know how you like to enjoy chia seeds, comment to let me know!
