Brussels sprouts are an amazing Winter and early Spring cruciferous vegetable and superfood that provides numerous health benefits. They are packed full of antioxidants and Vitamin C to nourish and support the immune system, cleansing properties that help to detox the body and they are anti-inflammatory which can reduce inflammation in the body. Brussels sprouts can support gut health, and without a healthy gut microbiome our overall health can suffer. Because they are high in fiber, they support digestive health, regular bowel movements and can aid in weight loss.

If you’ve attended any of my seminars or seasonal journeys, you have probably heard me say that the foods we eat affect the health of our cells, tissues, organs, thoughts, feelings, emotions, ability to focus and concentrate, our mood and behavior, our body’s ability to move and more! Knowing this and feeling the effects of different ways of eating helps me be intentional about my food choices. Food is so nourishing and powerful when consumed the way nature intended, and can be used as a tool to support the body’s functioning no matter the season.

Regularly consuming vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables such as  brussels sprouts, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, mustard greens, bok choy and arugula can support heart health, longevity, protect your cells from illness and decrease the risk of certain types of cancer. Brussels sprouts are super filling, and can be enjoyed as a side dish or snack. I’ve even enjoyed a large portion as a meal when mixed with a protein like cheese or nuts and felt satisfied.

Chopping brussels sprouts and letting them sit for a few minutes before cooking can allow compounds to form that protect against illness. Boiling or steaming brussels sprouts are nice ways to cook them because overcooking can pull out some of the important nutrients. You can also sauteé them in olive oil for 5-7 minutes, flip and cook for another few minutes seasoning half way through. When buying brussels, make sure they are green and don’t have any yellow on them, and wash well before eating.

A couple of ways I like to enjoy this delicious favorite vegetable of mine include:

Cut brussels sprouts in half and boil or sauteé in olive oil, season with salt and pepper and mix with hot sauce and sesame seeds.

Cut brussels sprouts in half and sauteé in olive oil flipping and seasoning (as mentioned above) with sea salt, black pepper and garlic powder. When done cooking, mix well with goat cheese. YUM!
